CHARACTER INFORMATION

EDIT:  CW for mentions of incest and child murder.

CHARACTER NAME: Yao Meng, other name Guangyao Jin. (In canon the names are written and referred to as the other way around, i.e Meng Yao, Jin Guangyao).

JOURNAL: [personal profile] guangyao

CANON: The Untamed.

CANON POINT: Near the end, during the Temple Incident when Wen Ning shows up with Baxia.

AGE: Mid-twenties. Ish.

ALIAS: Lianfang-zun.

SYNOPSIS:

Meng Yao was originally born to a prostitute who would often tell him his father was the leader of the Langling Jin Clan and would wait for him to pick her son up. He never did and Meng Yao wound up growing up in a brothel. Growing up he would carry the stigma of his mother's occupation with him and would often be bullied because of it. When his mother passed away he went to speak with his father only to be kicked down the stairs and told to leave. This event would be prominent enough to shape Meng Yao into the person he is today.

He would join the Qinghe Nie Clan and work his way up to be well liked by the Clan leader Nie Mingjue, also befriending the leader of the Gusu Lan Clan, Lan Xichen. Meng Yao was shaping himself to be the perfect attendant, always smiling always helpful, though occasionally his persona slipped. At one point he eventually disappears only to resurface as attending in the villainous Wen Clan, feeding info to Lan Xichen and eventually becoming highly regarded when he kills the head of the Wen Clan.

But that's not all! No, through scheming and hard work, Meng Yao manages to not only take down his half brother who was due to lead the Lanling Jin Clan, but he also kills his father, inheriting the position of leader. He even takes down Nie Mingjue with only one person suspecting his true nature. Such is the way of Jin Guangyao, everything he does is precise and underhanded enough that no-one really suspects and if they do they're dealt with in a manner that doesn't implicate him. Anything to stay in power until one person with their suspicions begins to tear him down piece by piece.

ADAPTATION:

Jin Guangyao is from what can be considered Ancient China and a fantasy setting at that. He'll have to get used to technology and convenience so at first won't settle in so easily. However Jin Guangyao is quick to learn and is used to thinking on his feet. It won't be long until he finds his groove and realises that things can be made to work and to his advantage, that being in a new world will work more to his benefit than anything. For Jin Guangyao it's about being relevant, whilst he may have started out without such big aspirations he now has a point to prove so at some point will begin to work on that once he's found his feet. He also needs to get used to seeing people from his world that have been dead for some time though again, that can be an advantage for him when he finds a way to twist it.

PRESENTATION:

Jin Guangyao's public persona is a far cry from what he truly thinks. His poker face is well practised; he is said to have a smiling face and that along with a twinkle in his eye and dimples in his cheeks also help that. He's happy to help and always ready to do so; nothing is too inconvenient! Those that Jin Guangyao works with see him as helpful and reliant, those who suspect he's up to no good rarely have a leg to stand on when it comes to proving it. Even when someone points out that he's the most suspicious person due to events, one of his closest friends can barely believe it, asking for irrefutable proof before action is taken. That's just the way Jin Guangyao wants it to be.

Despite everything though, some people see Jin Guangyao as a pest or someone who isn't worthy of even being part of a Clan. This is due to the fact his mother was a prostitute and a lot of people frown upon that, even going so far as to mock Jin Guangyao and bully him. Even then the man keeps on smiling, keeps on being polite because he knows eventually he'll have the upper hand and that saving face during such things will be more important in the long run.

PSYCHOLOGY:

Jin Guangyao is bitter and twisted. He's severely insecure and desperate to prove himself to those who mocked him growing up. Everything Jin Guangyao does is normally planned in some way to benefit himself; he knows that people watch and people gossip, that words can undermine everything a person does. So his persona is carefully crafter not to show how devious and manipulative he can be. Most people probably don't even realize they're being manipulated he's that adept at it. Jin Guangyao sees himself the victim and others the enemy. When things go sour and he's pressed on the things he's done he'll claim he "had no choice" despite there always being another way. He's so determined to be the one in the right that when someone threatens to tell the truth about his wife and son, he doesn't hesitate in killing them and pinning the blame on another clan.

There are no regrets in Jin Guangyao's mind when it comes to those he's killed or trodden on to work his way to a stable point in his life. He may feel some sadness towards his wife and son but at the end of the day they would have brought him down. The same can be said for everyone he's manipulated; even when Lan Xichen finds out the truth he's being used, Jin Guangyao constantly claims he would never hurt Lan Xichen — such manipulation doesn't hurt a person physically. He didn't kill Lan Xichen so therefore he never hurt him!

He's capable of loving some things as much as someone like Jin Guangyao can manage. He shows fondness towards his nephew Jin Ling and when building a statue to be worshipped it is not one of himself but his mother. That's about as much as Jin Guangyao can muster.

POWERS:

  • POWER #1: Golden Core Cultivation.

    DESCRIPTION:

Cultivation is a power within Jin Guangyao's world that is almost spiritual in how it works. It is something to be practised and worked on to strengthen and there are those who do not have these abilities. Part of this is a golden core that each cultivator has and this in turn grants:

    - Enhanced strength, health, reflexes and agility. Jin Guangyao's fighting skills are above average when it comes to what could be considered a normal person. Due to his smaller stature, Jin Guangyao is more inclined to use agility and reflexes than brute force. His sword (see below power) reflects this.
    - Healing. Jin Guangyao would heal faster than others and outlive them as cultivation tends to lead to more immortal paths in life.

    WEAKNESS:

Cultivation can be time consuming and requires a lot of focus and concentration, so if Jin Guangyao is distracted then his skills may suffer for it. If things are not done properly and in balance they can also have an adverse reaction, causing a Qi deviation than can ultimately kill someone in the same way it killed Nie Mingjue. Qi flows through the meridians in a body which is like a network, so not keeping them clear would result in internal failure.

  • POWER #2: Hensheng ("hatred for life").

    DESCRIPTION:

Hensheng is the name of Jin Guangyao's sword. Each cultivator's sword is unique and his is no exception. Whilst most would carry a sword by their side, Jin Guangyao carries Hensheng concealed at all times, normally wrapped at his waist or around his arm. It is extremely flexible enough to be able to do this, but also ridiculously sharp too. Once it is wrapped around an object, Jin Guangyao can apply spiritual pressure to cut the thing into pieces no matter what.

    WEAKNESS:

If it comes to brute strength, Hensheng is going to lose every time. It also needs to be wielded, so if Jin Guangyao is injured then his swordsmanship is also going to suffer.

SKILLS:
It is alluded to that Jin Guangyao has an eidetic memory. He's said to remember a name of a person on first meeting and knows their likes and dislikes by the second.

According to Xue Yang he's also an amazing actor.

VOICE SAMPLE:

[ Most of these are not going to be truthful and all spoken with a smile.]

  1. ["Is there anyone who holds a grudge against you? What will you do if they're here?"]
There are many who hold a grudge against me. The circumstances around my birth mean there are those who cannot accept my position as Clan Leader even though I have been in it for a while and done nothing to them. I try not to think about it too much; everyone is allowed to have their thoughts and as unkind as they may be, some of what they say is true. All I can do is work hard and try to prove myself to them and others to show them that I am more than what they think I should be. If they are here? It would not be a comfortable time but I will do my best to offer the hand of friendship. If they do not accept then I will be happy to leave them to it as that I would not wants strife especially in a new world.

  2. [ "What is the worst thing that's ever happened to you?"]
There are a lot of bad things that have happened; I was kicked down the stairs by my father, I saw a sect leader's Qi deviation all but kill him as he threatened myself and someone close to me. I was suspected by those who should have known better of being a traitor when I was feeding them information from the Wen Clan. Though I seem to have lost my train of thought, a lot of bad things have happened in my life but I do my best to work on them and make them into positives. Without these things happening I would not be where I am today. If I had to name the worst thing that has ever happened, it would have been the death of my family; my wife and son left too soon. My mother too. I would give anything to have them back.

  3. ["What is your happiest memory?"]
I would like to say the birth of my son though that was quickly taken from me. There are a lot of happy memories even if they are laced with sadness; learning to read with my mother, being accepted into a sect, helping win the Sunshot Campaign, getting married. Ah, so many to choose from, can it only be the one? If so they it would be equal between my son being born and the birth of my nephew Jin Ling who I am very fond of.

  4. ["Do you feel that every life is equal in value? What makes someone less deserving?"]
A lot of people think there are those less deserving than others for reasons beyong their control. A lot of people felt I was not worth knowing or that I did not deserve to exist became of my mother and the work she did. Why would anyone think that? What is it that declares that one person should have an elevated status over that of another? I believe everyone should be treated equally, even if that is a far fetched dream I find it difficult to judge others so harshly like I was judged. Only criminals should be judged and treated harshly.

  5. [ "Have you ever killed anyone? What was your reason?"]
I killed the leader of the Wen clan during the Sunshot campaign when he was distracted. It was not the most heroic of moves but it helped to end the bloodshed and the campaign. That clan felt they were owed everything and would kill any who got in their way. It was a means to an end that helped bring peace for a while and also helped my father finally recognise me.
